NEW
LOVE It's hard to remember a
time in New York when a Wednesday night at APT wasn't the go-to option.
Rich Medina's long-running residency was a perfectly balanced night of
party jams, slow jams, jams you didn't know, and jams you forgot you
knew, all of which went down in the company of a quintessentially New
York grouping of people -- always diverse, great looking and down to
party.
But as they do, institutions crumble, and APT, which had been in
decline for a few years, shuttered its doors about a month ago. The
good news is that Rich is carrying the torch not too far east to Love.
The soundsystem is great; there's more room for dancing than there ever
was on W 13th St; and Rich is partnering with Akalepse,
the absolutely excellent DJ who held down the upstairs on Wednesday
nights at APT. Here's to the new.

JAZZ
ON A WINTER'S DAY George Wein
is the man who started The Newport Jazz Festival, The Newport Folk
Festival, and The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Needless to
say, he's seen a lot in the over fifty years that he's produced these
series, and tonight he's chatting about and showing photos of his life
and experiences at the festivals. To boot, he's got a jazz trio
featuring one of our favorite local musicians, Anat Cohen, playing in
the midst of the evening.

HELP
FOR HAITI Though it happened
almost two months ago, Haiti is still reeling from the massive January
12th earthquake. The lack of basic infrastructure makes sustained
relief difficult, and there is still great need there. To get the full
details, check this Doctors
Without Borders briefing.
Tonight, a bunch of great local musicians and DJs are pulling together
to try to raise $10,000 to help with Doctors Without Borders'
continued relief efforts. The lineup is great, featuring live
performances from one-man-band Reggie Watts, a Haitian Carnival band
called Grand Bwa and an ambient synth act ARP; and DJ sets from disco
don Darshan Jesrani, Liquid Liquid's Sal P, and other local favorites
Duane Harriott, Marcos Cabral and Andy Beta. It only costs $10 to get
in, but if you can afford more, give more!

AFRICAN
DISCO Frank Gossner is
probably the biggest collector of West African vinyl in the world. He
even spent three years based in Conakry, Guinea building relationships
and shuttling through surrounding countries to find forgotten wax. Now
he's returned to New York, where he throws the occasional party and
puts together great compilations of his findings. Tonight is a
combination of those two things, with a party celebrating the release
of his newest comp, Lagos
Disco Inferno. We always want to
go and check Frank's parties out, but typically we're doing Mister
Saturday Night, so you can bet with this week off that we'll definitely
be down at Southpaw getting down to some African disco -- and we'll definitely be
buying that new record, too!

WHITE
LIGHTS AND STRIPES Under
Great White Northern Lights is a
movie about The White Stripes touring across Canada, playing every
province in the country. Some towns they visit are big. Some are small.
And in the small ones, they run into situations unlike any that they've
encountered in years, ones where many in the audience have no idea who
they are. The film's supposed to be great, like a modern day Don't
Look Back.
